PRP
AVA Plastic Surgery PRP Scalp Regeneration

Hair Loss Care (PRP)

A supplementary care treatment that delivers autologous blood-derived growth factors directly to weakened hair follicles. A small amount of the patient's own blood is collected, from which PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is separated and concentrated, then precisely injected into the dermal layer of the scalp to support an improved regenerative environment for the hair follicles. This non-surgical procedure is used in cases of early-stage hair loss, insufficient response to hair loss medication alone, and as supplementary aftercare following hair transplantation.

Check Point Highly Recommended For

  • Thinning hair at the crown or parting area
  • Early-stage hair loss where hair transplantation feels too significant a step
  • Requiring supplementary care to support graft survival following hair transplantation
  • Insufficient response to hair loss medication (e.g. finasteride) alone
  • Wishing to slow the progression of hair loss through a non-surgical supplementary approach

Hair Loss Care (PRP) Procedure

STEP 01
Scalp Assessment

Evaluation of scalp photographs, follicle condition, and stage of hair loss to determine the number of sessions and injection area

STEP 02
Autologous Blood Collection

Approximately 10–20 cc of blood is collected from a vein — equivalent to a standard blood test

STEP 03
PRP Separation & Concentration

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is separated via centrifugation and is rich in growth factors including PDGF, VEGF, and TGF-β

STEP 04
Intradermal Scalp Injection

PRP is precisely injected via micro-needle into the dermal layer of the scalp in the affected areas. Supplementary MTS or radiofrequency treatment may be combined

Q&A

Q.How is PRP scalp treatment different from hair transplantation?
A.PRP is a non-surgical supplementary care treatment aimed at supporting the regenerative environment of existing weakened hair follicles, and operates at a different level from hair transplantation, which involves relocating new follicular units. PRP alone may be appropriate in the early stages of hair loss, and it is also used as supplementary aftercare to support graft survival following hair transplantation.
Q.How many sessions are needed before results can be expected?
A.A typical approach involves an intensive course of 3–6 sessions at monthly intervals, followed by a transition to maintenance treatment. Changes in hair thickness and the rate of hair loss progression are generally reported to become noticeable from around sessions 3–4, though individual results vary considerably.
Q.Can this be combined with hair loss medication such as finasteride?
A.Combining the two is common practice. Medication acts via hormonal pathways, while PRP acts on the environment surrounding the hair follicles, making the two approaches complementary. Your current medications will be reviewed at consultation and a combined treatment plan will be discussed.
Q.Is it painful?
A.A topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the scalp prior to the micro-needle injections, so discomfort is generally minimal. Mild scalp sensitivity may be present for 1–2 days following treatment, but this typically does not interfere with daily activities.
Q.Are there any side effects?
A.As the treatment uses components derived from the patient's own blood, the risk of allergic or foreign body reactions is very low. Temporary redness or minor bleeding at the injection sites may occur, which resolves naturally within a few days. Strenuous exercise and alcohol are best avoided on the day of treatment.
Q.Is this suitable for female hair loss?
A.Yes. Intradermal PRP injection is one of the standard options for diffuse hair loss (female pattern hair loss) as well. During your consultation, we will also guide you through an assessment of potential underlying causes such as hormonal or thyroid-related factors.
Q.When can I wash my hair after the treatment?
A.It is recommended to avoid touching the scalp for approximately 6–8 hours after the procedure. Hair may be washed gently from the following day. Perming and colouring are recommended from 1–2 weeks post-treatment.
Post-op Instructions
  • Do not rub the surgical area strongly for about a week.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 2 weeks as they delay recovery.
  • Swelling and bruising vary individually but will gradually improve.
  • Light walking or stretching helps reduce swelling.
