Onda, InMode, Potenza — Which One Is for Which Problem?
Three devices, three different targets. One reduces fat, one tightens gently, one rebuilds skin texture. Picking by brand name rather than by mechanism is how patients end up treating the wrong layer.
What 'Energy Contouring' Means
These treatments deliver energy — microwave, radiofrequency, or radiofrequency via microneedles — into the skin and subcutaneous fat to achieve fat reduction, skin tightening or textural change without an incision.
The word “lifting” is applied to all of them in marketing, but the depth reached and the tissue affected differ substantially. Matching the device to the complaint — a double chin is not the same problem as enlarged pores — is the entire point.
The Three Devices
Onda — microwave (Coolwaves)
Microwave energy is preferentially absorbed by fat, reducing localised deposits and refining the contour. Used on the submental area and jawline, and also on body areas such as the arms and abdomen.
Suits: double chin, jawline definition, localised body contouring.
InMode — radiofrequency
Radiofrequency acting on the fat layer and skin firmness together, producing a gentler contouring effect. Often chosen for a softer jawline refinement rather than a dramatic reduction.
Suits: mild double chin, jawline refinement, general contour maintenance.
Potenza — microneedling radiofrequency
Fine needles deliver radiofrequency directly into the dermis, targeting pores, texture, fine lines and firmness. Frequently combined with a pumping tip that assists absorption of skin boosters.
Suits: enlarged pores, rough texture, fine lines, early loss of firmness.
※ Onda leans toward fat and body contour, InMode toward gentle tightening, Potenza toward pores and texture. Which device or combination applies is decided by examination.
How These Differ from Ultherapy and Thermage
A common source of confusion, since all five are sold as “lifting.”
- Ultherapy reaches the SMAS — the deepest of this group — and is the one aimed at lifting descended structure.
- Thermage heats the dermis broadly for overall tightening.
- Onda targets fat, which none of the others primarily do.
- InMode works on fat and skin together, more gently.
- Potenza works in the dermis via needles, for texture rather than lift.
So: sagging structure → ultrasound or surgery. Volume of fat → microwave or radiofrequency. Skin surface → microneedling RF. Treating a double chin with a texture device, or pores with a fat device, is a predictable disappointment.

- Transient redness, swelling, warmth or tenderness
- Bruising, particularly with microneedling
- Temporary altered sensation or numbness
- Rarely, burns, blistering or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — risk higher in deeper skin tones with aggressive settings
- Contour irregularity where fat reduction is uneven
- Needle marks or small crusts after microneedling, usually settling within days
All of these treatments work cumulatively and their effects diminish over time. A single session rarely produces the result shown in advertising, and honest planning states the expected number of sessions in advance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Which device is best for a double chin?
If there is a genuine fat deposit, Onda or InMode address it; Onda is the more fat-directed of the two. If the problem is loose skin rather than fat, tightening or lifting is the correct route — and if the deposit is substantial, liposuction removes in a single session what devices reduce gradually.
Q. How many sessions will I need?
These are cumulative treatments. The number depends on the device, the area and your starting point, and should be estimated at consultation rather than assumed from an advertisement.
Q. Is there downtime?
Generally minimal. Redness and mild swelling are common on the day; microneedling can leave small marks for a few days.
Q. Can I combine these with Ultherapy or a skin booster?
Yes, and combinations are common because the devices act at different depths. Sequencing and intervals matter, so the plan is set by the physician rather than assembled from separate promotions.
Coming from Abroad — Planning Your Trip
Patients who travel to Seoul for surgery usually want one question answered first: how long do I need to stay?
- Stay through suture removal. For surgical procedures sutures generally come out 7–10 days after the operation (see the recovery timeline above). Plan to remain in Seoul until your sutures are out and your surgeon has cleared you to travel. Exact timing is decided case by case.
- Consult before you book flights. Send photos and your questions through WhatsApp first. It is better to learn that a procedure is not right for you before a ticket is bought than after you land.
- Language and administrative support. We work with Yeon & Yeon, a medical-tourism agency and staffed by attorneys licensed in both Korea and California, providing interpretation for English, Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Russian-speaking patients.
- After you return home. Recovery continues long after the flight back. Follow-up questions can be raised through the same WhatsApp channel you used before surgery.
